I worked in a pretty large company warehouse where we had a large shop for truck repairs, large and small. We also sold 1000’s of parts and shipped hundreds of packages out everyday. The pickups were mostly Fed Ex and UPS. We had about about 60 employees and everybody clocked out at 5:00 PM but me and the city parts delivery driver who always came in late because of traffic. So I sit in the warehouse waiting on the city driver to come in first to turn in his company truck, keys, cash collected, credit card receipts and parts picked up along the way. I check and balance his day receipts and he clocks out and is on his way. Now the UPS man usually shows up first and I help load him off the warehouse platform. then the Fed Ex driver shows, loads up and I let the bay door down and lock it and clock out and set the alarm and it’s time to go home.
It’s about 7:30 PM in the winter time and it’s just about dark, I get in my truck, crank up drive 75 yards to the exit gate, park outside the gate to lock up. I’m putting the lock in the fense post loops and look out the corner of my eye and see movement inside the gate. There is movement against the far corner wall of the building around the shop area and an employee truck is sitting there. I unlock the gate, get in my truck and drive back in the lot up to the employee’s truck,. A longtime employee is sitting (I’ll call him George) in his truck saying it won’t crank. Cut to the chase, he’s drunk and had one of those devices that won’t let you crank up and drive if you are drunk. He had 3 DUI’s and a Judge, had ordered the device installed (about $150/$200 a month) on his truck to drive to work only after his wife pleaded with the Judge. Please Judge help me he has to keep this job.
As I get up close he says “blow in this tube so my truck will crank.” I don’t think so, you go out there and kill somebody and it’s your ass and mine too. So I take his phone and make a call to his home and a female answers. I say is your mother home, she says nope what’s wrong, your calling on my fathers phone. I explained everything in detail and the daughter said I’ll be right over just hang tight.
The daughter shows up 20 minutes later with her boyfriend madder than a wet hen, thanks me, pushes her father out of the drivers seat into the passenger seat and gets in the truck. George resist and gives her some lip and she beats the living crap out of him. She says don’t you dare touch me or you’ll need medical attention when I get through with you, I’m tired of this shit and I’m not taking it anymore. So he calms down after that, she blows in the tube device 3 times because it’s so polluted from all his attempts and cranks up. She says thanks again, drives out the gate and her boyfriend follows in her car.
That was on a Friday so George had the weekend to sober up and I did notice he showed up Monday morning right on time. He thanked me later in the day and he said he was sorry for all the trouble. I said you know George you ought to get straight and fly right that daughter of yours I believe could take both of us in a street fight. He said you don’t know the half of it, I spent all weekend in Hell in the house, they wouldn’t let me go anywhere. I had to just stay there and take it and listen to it 24 hours a day.
I didn’t see George to much after that, I retired less than a year later. All in all it was still a fun job, you know one of those jobs where there is never a dull day. Sometimes in retirement I still miss it. GOOD LUCK GEORGE
